Young Engineers
Grades 2nd-8th
Service Description
Students learn engineering concepts through hands-on, interactive activities that emphasize creativity, problem-solving, and critical thinking. Here are some effective ways our teachers introduce engineering to students: STEM Challenges: Provide students with real-world engineering challenges that require them to design, build, and test solutions. These challenges could involve building structures, creating simple machines, or designing devices to solve specific problems. LEGO Education: Utilize LEGO kits designed for education, such as LEGO Education WeDo or LEGO Education SPIKE Prime, which combine building with coding to teach engineering principles in a fun and engaging way. Engineering Design Process: Teach students the engineering design process, which involves identifying a problem, brainstorming solutions, planning and designing a solution, building a prototype, testing and evaluating the prototype, and making improvements based on feedback. Maker Spaces: Create a maker space or engineering lab where students have access to a variety of materials and tools to explore and create their own engineering projects. Encourage open-ended exploration and experimentation. STEM Kits and Resources: Use STEM kits and resources specifically designed for elementary students, such as snap circuits, robotics kits, and simple machine kits, to introduce engineering concepts in a hands-on way. Guest Speakers and Field Trips: Invite engineers or professionals from various engineering fields to speak to students about their work and the importance of engineering in everyday life. Organize field trips to local engineering firms, museums, or universities to expose students to real-world engineering environments. Integration with Other Subjects: Integrate engineering activities with other subjects, such as math, science, and language arts, to reinforce learning and demonstrate the interdisciplinary nature of engineering. Project-Based Learning: Implement project-based learning activities where students work collaboratively on long-term, interdisciplinary projects that require them to apply engineering principles to solve real-world problems. Storytelling and Creativity: Use storytelling and creative activities to engage students in engineering concepts and inspire their imagination. Encourage students to create stories or scenarios that involve engineering challenges and solutions. Reflection and Iteration: Encourage students to reflect on their
